The Chinese-Association-of-Woking Chinese School provides Cantonese and Mandarin language classes for people in Woking, Surrey, and the surrounding areas of St John the Baptist School. The Chinese school encourages students to cherish Chinese culture and heritage and to foster and enhance friendship with all communities in Britain. The school also provides a variety of cultural activities including its very popular traditional Chinese dance and brush-painting courses.
Special thanks to St John the Baptist School for letting CAW freely use the school on Saturdays for teaching.
History
The Chinese-Association-of-Woking Chinese class was first set up by Catalina Brook in 1987. The teaching language was Cantonese using traditional Chinese writing. The class was based in the United Reformed Church, Woking, and the teachers recruited were the parents themselves on a voluntary basis. Since 2002, students have achieved high standards in Chinese GCSE and A Level.
With the overwhelming demand for learning Mandarin from both adults and children in 2002, the CAW Management Committee set up Mandarin classes headed by Dr Anbin Wang. As part of the association, Mandarin classes for both adults and children commenced on 5 October 2002, forming the Chinese School.
Because of its expansion, on 11 January 2003 the Chinese school moved to St John the Baptist School, where it is now situated, sharing the classrooms and facilities with the school.
Over 80 pupils, both adults and children, had enrolled in the language classes. The United Reformed Church, Woking, in which the association held these classes did not have enough space and time was restricted. Moving to St John the Baptist School meant more room for teaching, cultural activities and parking space!
Our sincere appreciation goes to Ani McGill, the headteacher of SJB, for her full support in this.
